So i have a 700gph return pump. It needs to travel through about 4 1/2 feet of tubing vertically. Would the gph stay the same or reduce because of being vertical?

It will be reduced due to gravity and friction of the liquid traveling through the tubing. Canisters since they operate on a closed loop only have to fight the friction which is why they can have smaller pumps.

Many pumps have what they are rated for at certain head heights so look for that on the pumps box or online somewhere.

thanks ill try that but would it drop below 600 gph?

im using a 950gph pump with about 5 1/2 ft of head (vertical height) and am getting around 600-700 gph according to the graph that was provided.
Course i spent a lot on my pump too cheaper ones will lose far more per foot
