I recently bought a small internal power filter for my 10 gallon hospital tank. Now that the tank is no longer in use I am wondering if it would be possible to reverse the flow of the filter. I am thinking that I could hang it so that the top lip is just below the surface of the water so that it acts like an overflow then the internal pump would push the filtered water back into the tank thru the bottom. I just need something to keep the surface of the water clean of the oil film that I am getting from Masivore.

Neat idea but Not sure you can reverse the flow. With most mag motor pumps the water is thrown outward by the impeller, regardless of which way it spins.

I don't get it.

See how the whole thing is in the tank? Normally the spout sits just above the surface of the water and the filter draws water in from the bottom slots. I want to set it so the spout is just below the surface, letting the water pour in from the top. I need to reverse the flow of the pump so that it will pump the water out the bottom

I always wondered how those straight fins on the impellers moved the water. Do you think I could get the direction of flow that I want by heating and twisting the fins? Maybe I will order a spare impeller from DR foster and try it out.
