so i figured out my tap water is my main problem i have 1ppm PO4 and 20ppm nitrate in my tao water which is causeing some SERIOUS brown algea and such.... so i was suggested to add a reverse osmosis unit since the tap water is my problem<br><br>now how do i know which size is needed GPH wise with how many canister's, and how do i hook it up to work properly.... i have a 72x19x24 tank so roughly 140-150gals, and i use a python to change water weekly, how do i hook it up ?? i was told it for when i re fill my tank it will tke the impurities out before they get into my tank but how do i hook it up do so ?<br><br>any help would be great thanks, im a total newb for reverse osmosis

I use an RO/DI unit for my fish. You will need to use a RO/tap water mix. Fish need the minerals found in tap to survive. I do a 60% RO to 40% tap mix to keep my parameters where I want them. I would go 50/50 to start with. YOu will need to buy a whole unit to start with. I purchased the air/water/ice Typhoon 5 stage kit. Seemed pretty reasonable and had great reviews. here is the link to get you started http://www.airwaterice.com/c=g2KqUK...N/Typhoon-5-stage-RODI-Reefkeeper-75-GPD.html. I have a 55 gallon aquarium I store my water in. I turn it on a few days before I want to do a water change to fill the storage tank up. I always have an airstone running to keep the water from going stagnate. I just use a mag pump to pump from my ro water tank to the aquarium and then add the stored tap to fill it up.

ya i really dont have a extra tank to just have water sitting around in and i aint got any room to have a extra tank especially for the fact i change 90% of my water from my 140 gal tank lol .... id need like a 100g tank worth to do what im doing now ... seems like more work then it really worth to be running a RO unit like that

what about a media reactor with some nitrate/phosphate remover in it like a clearmax by fluval and using something like a phos ban 550 or 150 unit ??

I use RO on my 265, local water sucks. Your best bet is to set up one or several 55 gallon Rubbermaid trash cans. I don't mix tap with RO since the local water scares the crap out of me, all the local stray cats are toothless in about 3 years. I use seachem's powder to re mineralize my water, Equilibrium and Alkaline buffer.

If you want 100 g then set up two when you do a change then put them away after. Also get an RO system with an Auto shutoff unless you want a flood.

I got a valved splitter from my washing machine hookup and had one line go to my RO/DI and the other to the washer. Id fill buckets up. It takes a while but eventually I got a trash can and had the RODI fill line go to the trash can and fill it. I had a heater and a pump in there to heat and circulate.

well i dont really think i have room for like a 100g tank or a RO unit to go in my house to work like that... defintly not enough room tho..

what about using a phos ban reactor 550 with some nitrate remover in it ? or even 2 of them one with phosphate remover and one with nitrate remover or just stuff like fluvals clearmax (phosphate/nitrate remover) ??

You can use High Capacity GFO from Bulk Reef Supplies. It is a bit expensive, but it works. If you're a little handy with science you can bakle the GFO when done and revitalize it it for use again. There are directions on how to do it.

By the way, are you using a sump? If so, you need to load your sump with a macroalgae, such as chaeto to absorb and use up the phosphates and nitrates.
