after the sad and unexpected loss of my dorado:cry:, i felt that i needed a new toothy fish so i ordered a rhaphiodon vulpinis through the shop i work at:headbang2
i was wondering if their basic care was the same as payara, or if there are any differences i should know about... im stoaked:D

Skiddish..... Much more than any of the rest of the Payara. Do really good in groups.

You'll need a BIG tank unless you don't mind it's snout being messed up.

Might be ok if you have really really mellow tankmates.

VERY underated fish. One of the MOST entertaining fish you will ever watch at feeding time.... Also in my experience MUCH easier to break from live food than any of the Hydrolycus species.... I believe this may be due to them feeding from the surface more. Freeze dried krill works really well. Just make sure your lids aren't too close to the surface as they will come out of the water.

thats exactly the kind of stuff i was looking for, thanks a ton:D

No problem..... Any other questions just ask.... I've had mine for over 3 years now and have had it with a bunch of different tankmates. My only regret is that I only have 1.

they do the coolest backflips when catching their food... im deff gonna scoop some up next time i see them..

I would think they'll be outcompeted.... But I suppose if you were to "plug up" the Cichla then you'd be able to feed the Rhaph. If the Rhaph keeps smashing it's face you'll know it's not particularly fond of the tankmate......

A store in Jersey had a tank full of babies in the spring. How big is yours now?

Hard to tell, as it's in a pond. Guessing a very conservative foot.
