I was just wondering if anyone has any experiences with rhino iguanas, they seem really cool. Thanks

I currently own a rhino iguana. He's probably just under 2 years old, and about 28-30" (not exactly sure). MikeD here on MFK (I think that's his name) also has one, a little older and larger than mine.

I really enjoy my guy. He's very inquisitive, pretty active, and while he still doesn't really like being held, he does like to be petted, and seems to enjoy me helping pull of stuck sheds.

He's a very good eater, loves any leafy greens, green beans, corn, carrots, peas. He also likes blueberries a LOT. Besides that he gets grapes, and occasionally something like kiwi as a treat.

He also really likes banana nut muffins, although that was accidental on our part. He's only gotten them once, but he literally climbed up my body trying to get another bite after picking up some crumbs off the floor. The fact that he's a vegetarian really helps with eating, as we don't have to worry about keeping roaches or mice, and my wife (who is a vegetarian herself) definitely likes that he doesn't eat any meat.

We've been living with my parents for the last 8 and a half months while we're between houses (moving in a week or two, hopefully), so I haven't been able to give him as much attention and exercise as I'd like to. Once we move, he's going to have the run of the finished part of the basement, with just my aquariums and computer down there for company. Hopefully that will get him to calm down and socialize a bit more.

All in all, I'm really glad i've got this little guy. He's fun to watch, easy to care for and feed, and while he doesn't give us affection in return (at least not yet), he does provide some entertainment and personal enjoyment.

Are you considering getting one?

i own a rhino iguana. she is very... well lets just say she has a mind of her own. she doesnt really like being held, but as soon as i pick her up and get her out of her cage she is fine. she loves baths and sitting on my shoulder while i am on the computer. i have lucked out getting a female so she stays a little smaller and grows slower than a male would.

just keep in mind that they are alot of work. just imagine having a 4' plus lizard roaming around the house. with big claws haha.

i would not suggest getting one as your first large lizard. i owned a big green before this one, and i still own the big green. i wouldnt trade them for anything. even though my girl thinks we should sell the rhino due to space haha. but they are getting new cages soon within the next month.

i wouldnt get one just because they are cool. they are a big commitment.

Yeah they're pretty cool. I once had a chuckwalla and I currently have an ornate uro, I just wanted to get some real owners expireince

Yeah, the claws are sharp as hell! And unfortunately he's not calm enough for me to trim them yet. its like having 20 razor sharp needles digging into you and sliding across your skin when he gets excited/scared.

My guy (still not 100% sure on the sex) will sit on my shoulder right after his bath, if I don't move too much. He also likes to taste inside my ear, which is kind of gross.

One of his favorite things is sitting on the windowsill of our second story bedroom and staring out the window at the birds and squirrels in the tree. He'll sit there for a good hour or two at a time if we let him.

They are a very big commitment. Barring any unforeseen circumstances that would force me to find him a new home, I expect to have this guy with me for many many years to come. Having seen vidoes online of very tame rhino iggies a good 4 feet long, I can't wait until he's bigger and more docile than he is now. Part of that will come with the more interaction and free-roaming he'll get at the new house.

While I admit my getting him was definitely a bit of an impulse buy, I did my research and figured out what I needed to do to take care of him. He seems to have flourished under my care so far. You just have to really be committed to spending years raising one of these guys, and not just expect him to be a quick fad you get tired of after 6 months or so.
