I've kept some rhinohorns for a while and decided to write down somethings I've observed about them because no one seems to know anything about them.
1. They are an "eats everything, everywhere" fish. Mine is a bottom feeder as well as on of the fish that will swim up to the upper level and compete for food with the rasboras. He also goes along the bottom and strafes it with the cories. He eats quite a lot too.
2. The more planted the tank, the safer they'll feel and more active they'll be. That goes for decorations as well. Generally the more stuff they have to hide or sit on makes them happier.
2. They have amazing chameleon abilities. I spelled that wrong. Regardless, my goby is constantly shifting colors when going through different areas of the tank. When he is on the darker substrate, it takes you a minute to find him. On the sand, he goes basically transparent. He goes from completely see through to dark dark brown. Crazy.
3. No one seems to mess with them. Before I planted my tank (and a little after, oops) I had some Silver Dollars in with my goby. The leader of the SDs grew big enough to have eaten the goby pretty quickly. And the goby had only been in the tank for a week at that point. The SDs never ever looked twice at him. And the goby was always swimming around with them. Weird right?
4. They are extremely social, when not threatened. In fact, my rasboras seem to have accepted him as one of them, and follow him when he joins their school.
5. Either they don't get very big, or they are slow growers. Mine seems to be sticking to about 1.5"s. a little bigger than that. But not much.
6. So far, not nocturnal. Super active during the day, sleeps in a cave at night. Or under a branch.
7. Really, really freaking difficult to catch. Like a mini torpedo that changes color and blends in with his surrounding. Plan on tearing up your tank should you attempt this.
Well, thats all I got people. Hope this was helpful and or informative. Oh, and hes in freshwater. Gasp!
