Rhodesian Ridgeback

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've never personally owned one, but i know of a few people who have. I've heard nothing but good things about them. They're great family companion dogs, can be a very good watchdog/very protective of it's family. They're also said to be a good hunter, but I've never seen one hunt. They're similar to Labs in many ways, in that you need to exercise them or you'll start getting a lot of destructive tendencies, chewing in particular. The big particular issue with them is how exciteable and rough they can be with smaller children, again same thing in most labs and retrievers. Overall, seem to be a great dog with a great temperament, if raised correctly.

i know they are a popular breed here.....lots of inter breeding also, the gene pool is getting shallow for them, making *some* of them very ill :( stupid bloody kennel club. anyway rant over lol

I've heard from people that own them.....they love chasing other animals so don't get a hamster lol

The way they stand is just pure sexyness! Not like my scruffy puppy just flobbing about everywhere. lol

They are very sexy dogs. lol
Sad about the inbreeding... I had an inbred schnauzer, a lot of health problems came with him....
They were used to hunt lions, so I'm aware of their prey drive... I'm not sure that I would be able to ever own one, since I will always have a horde of rescued shih-tzu's and pomeranians.

Though one could make a good yard dog along with a pit or shepherd, which I will always have.

ah i didn't know they were once used to hunt lions, when I said hunt, I was referring to waterfowl, I raise labs for waterfowl hunting, sorry i didn't clarify!

I would never guess they hunted lion by their looks. They're called African Lion Hounds as well.
I only know from researching the breed and watching Dogs 101

Is that a KC Spaniel, Princess?
They are love, never met one with a bad temper...

yup yup yuppppp my lil CKCS .... actually Robert is very agressive towards strangers.. he was beaten as a puppy..he's from a puppy farm in Wales. He wasn't allowed out for the first 6month of his life he had kennel cough, worms and fleas.

Fate brought us together, i know if i didn't rescue him he would be dead now. The vet was going to put him down if the last week of medication didn't work.

Any dog who comes from one of those awful mills is going to have problems.
But he's not a bad dog, is he? He looks like a little prince lol
Tink (my baby) is dog aggressive and acts like an insane chicken if she sees certain dogs, but I know she is not a bad dog.
No dog is, if you get down to it, there is a reason for everything a 'nasty' or 'bad' dog does.

Our inbred schnauzer was a puppy mill dog too, my grandparents bought him as a 6 week old puppy from a pet shop... He is so inbred... I looked at his papers when we had to give him away and it was disgusting... His grand parents and great grand parents were also his parents.... No wonder he had so many health issues.
