I have a 75 gallon with a 10in rhom. Right now I have a FX5 running on the tank, but was wondering if I should add a powerhead. I see lots of posts of people with powerheads, but not sure if it is entirely necessary. With an FX5 on a 75g there is a ton of flow, so not sure the powerhead is going to add much over there.

Feedback on whether it is necessary, size/power, and how to place it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I don't personally know how much flow you are getting from the output of the FX5 but I would say that the addition of a powerhead is probably unnecessary. Others will probably tell you differently, but as long as there is some current he should be ok. Too much flow can really stress fish out.

A powerhead isnt necessary for most species. People who keep fish that are native to fast flowing water such as rapids will require a powerhead. If your tank has enough flow to blow around his food in the current you should be fine. Like said above, too much current can be a big stress factor for some species. Its up to you to judge what is more preferable for your stock.

My rhom loves current. The more the better for him. His 125 gallon has an fx5, a hydor mag 6, and a hydor 1400gph and he loves it. I havent seen a piranha yet that hasnt seemed to be more comfortable with a power head. Even my old 1" serras/pygos were stoked about it. Give that fish some flow. Fishes love flow.

In a 75, id recommend a hydor 1400gph. Put the intake and the output on the same corner, then have the powerhead in the center of the side glass panel pointed towards the surface.

most of piranhas love flow.
for 75g with FX5 I would add an other HK powerhead anywhere from 1200-1600gph should be fine for a 10" rhom.
