Ive always wanted a piranha but have never really looked into one. Ive decided nows the time and that I think I want a rhom. I love the look of the adult ones. But I dont know alot about this particular fish so I have some questions...

1. What kind gets really dark and has blood red eyes?

2. How fast do they grow?

3. Will they readily eat frozen food? Dry?

4. Where can I get one for the least $$$ but still get what I want?

5. Male? Female? Does it matter?

6. How much to pay?

7. Other cool piranha you think are cooler than rhoms that are affordable and reasons why you like them.

I am not an experts, but I will answer your question.


1. What kind gets really dark and has blood red eyes?
All Rhomb have red eyes. But it's depending on the rhomb itself. some may and may not have it. you can get a peru or Vinny Rhomb. they get very dark and big.

2. How fast do they grow?
With proper care, good water, lots of space, big tank, well maintain, can grown up to 6-7" with in the first year. It will slowly grown 1" per year after that.. Most piranha owner just go them big. As big as they can get the hands on. If you have the patient and time, you can get a small one. But I would get about 7-9" in 75gallon.

3. Will they readily eat frozen food? Dry?
Frozen food are good for them. I feed my piranha silver side, semlt, frozen food, white meat fillets, pallets, clams, scallops, etc...all these are healty for them. Stay away from live feeder.

4. Where can I get one for the least $$$ but still get what I want?
Other will recommend you to AS or SA or some where els. I only dealth with ECZS-1 in NJ. He only ship to legal state. His price are way cheaper then AS and SA. I was there a couple of days ago. Most of his piranha are finger chaser.

5. Male? Female? Does it matter?
Good luck with that. You can not sex them, it's hard unless you got a breeding pair. But most likely you will never know male for female. unless you cut them open and look for eggs.

6. How much to pay?
Depending how big you want. and how much you willing to spend, it's very addicted.

Personally I like Serrasalmus Geryi. it's one of the rare piranha and you won't see them often in the market, but very pricey. At ECZS-1 Got 4 of them around 9-10" for $400 each.
I have see other sponsor/vendor got $300 for 6-7".

all can get red eyes but may or may not have as dark as you like, jet black peru's are probably your best bet.

as slow as 1-2" a year as fast as 5" a year when small

3. Will they readily eat frozen food? Dry?
frozen lighty thawed market fish are readily accepted, less likely for dry foods

4. Where can I get one for the least $$$ but still get what I want?
shop around with vendors some less rare small ones are fairly cheap

no and as stated nearly impossible to sex

6. How much to pay?
depends on varient, different rare varients can fetch high prices for adults, $800+, but many sell for less.

terns and caribe, both pygo and both kick ass imo

all at larger sizes. dark gravel will make the fish look black while white gravel could make it turn grey

up to 5-7 in first year then about an inch a year (each sucseeding year usually will grow less and less)

well about a pound of flakes a day should do...jk
frozen is the best way ans go with fillets like sticky rice mentioned

Not Sexually demophic (external)

depends on locality, size, shape (high back..)
anything past 12" is going to be probably over 300$

if you want you could do a shoal or terns, reds , caribe and piraya

1-2" reds cost 10$
terns at 1-3"cost under 50
caribe at 1-3" cost under 50
piraya at 3-5" can cost about 100


eczs is East coast zoological supply so if yousearch the forums you should find it
