Hello,

I've decided on a rhom for my 55 gallon.

I'll be purchasing one most likely around 3 inches in length. How much should I expect to pay?

And then to behaviour. I know to expect skittishness at first for what could be a long time. What can I do to make the fish more comfortable during this time?

And then growth. I get that it's slow, and I'm alright with that. I have heard however, that a few things can be done to help it, the first being current to swim against and the second being a good diet. What do you keepers prefer to feed?

Any other advice is greatly appreciated!

3" will run you 50-80$ around my area, all rhoms are different, some will acclimate faster some will take weeks, as long as the parameters are good (zero ammonia/nitrite-low n03) you provide hiding places, and a good diet of pellets & fish fillets like talapia it will be good.

Mine really likes bubbles so I added a lot, it also likes plants and dw, anything mocking its natural habitat is suggested.

Growth is very slow, a 55 will last you a 18-24months imo. Current helps it burn energy, thus it consumes more. A good old ph or circulator helps, korrilia has some good stuff!

As far as brand of pellets I prefer nls.

Goodluck and pics ASAP

yea I remember that one, they had babies there awhile back, that's where I got mine but aquascape has a heavy selection of awesome piranhas, I always enjoy buying juvies and raising them to adults.

To make a rhom comfortable heres what I've found.
Dim lights- they are an ambush predator from mostly blackwater conditions, keep light dim or add floating plants.
Cover- they are very cautious and love good hiding, especially live plants.
Wide footprint- not going to happen in a 55, but rhoms like to be able to retreat, and I've seen how much better they do when they have plenty of space front to back to get away. Mine has a comfort zone of about 3'. Theres a definitive line he will challenge me, but back away if I get closer than 3' to him

And I feed mine anything and everything from the water including clams, tilapia fillets, salmon, live crayfish, cichlids, night crawlers, cod... Whatever is on sale or I have donated by friends who just wanna see him eat crazy stuff

Current and diet won't speed up growth but a bad diet could slow it down. Just expect painfully slow growth for a long time.

I'm excited for you though. Post pics when you get it

And I believe the theory that rhoms will only grow x number of inches in captivity as the really big ones were caught big. Never heard of a juvie grown to over 12" but I have heard of t1's rhom that's like 30yrs old or something and 11"

Me too. Hence why I dont think you can increase growth with a good diet and current.

Even if you did by say 10% we aren't talking much difference on a fish that grows like an inch a year lol. I honestly don't think mine has put on more than .5" in a year, but he has grown vertically and fatter noticeably.
