Hello, I plan to get a rhom late this summer, but I have heard they grow incredibly slowly because of a parasite that takes so much from them.

Is this true? And if so, is this something I can treat and it will grow faster or am I just out of luck?

rhoms are slow growers regardless you treat them or not, is treatment necessary? it's up to you. you could use prazipro and/or parasite clear depends on what type of parasites are you are targeting at. rhoms in the wild never receive treatments and they grow up just fine. it's more so your water condition I would say.

Oh ok. Say I bought one about 2" long already. How fast would it grow after that? With good feeding, water conditions, and 90 gallon tank.

Whats he said... There have been a few around that say treating them for parasites has helped increase growth rate. I don't think it was ever really proven.

rhom grows somewhat fast when small, you should be able to get it to 6-7" within the first year then the growth generally slows down from there.
depends on fish, you'll probably average 1" per year. some may not grow for couple years then all of sudden it goes into a growth spurt.
typically they'll max out at around 12" in aquarium if grow out from small.
all the large size ones you see are most likely imported

Mine is 4 years now and only 7 inches, but I knew that when I got him and counted on him not outgrowing a 55 anytime soon.

So I really shouldn't expect anything more than 6 or so inches in a year?

(going with what you guys are saying and what else I'm seeing)

about 6-7". also depends on the fish, genetic plays a role as well.
