I know rhombeus are a solitary species, but what about keeping them in an obviously large tank with piranhas but seperated with a divider? Would that cause a problem or is it ok? It is something I'd like to do in the near future.

it's been done. You'd want a really secured divider though for obvious reasons.

When you say "with piranhas" you mean a rhom on one side and red bellies on the other?

Like ballin' said As long as the divider is not going anywhere and the tank is large enough for the fish on each side then it would work.

Thanks for the responses...

LOL yeah. My ideal tank would be a mixed shoal i.e. natteris/ternetzis on one side and a rhombeus on the other.

It will work as long as the divider is secure but I would advise against it.
Either of the fish may get stressed(most likely the rhom) and not thrive as it would with the whole tank to itself.
How large of a tank were you thinking?
3-4 reds would need atleast a 75gal 4ftx18in to thrive and a rhom at least 3ft depending on how big it is. You would need a minimum of a 6ft 125gal to do this and even that would not do for the life of both species.
I would focus my energy on either one or the other, keep em right or dont keep em at all.

That's ok cos I was thinking of a tank at least 300 gallon in size. I know the rhoms especially need a lot of space so this would obviously be a super tank.

300g would be a good size (depends on footprint of the tank).
you can plant both side of the divider very well so they do not see each other (reduce stress), just make sure you still have enough flow through the divider or have filters on both side of the divider.

Don't try this at home!! LOL I currently doing an experiment. It worked for me about 12yrs ago... I put 2 rhoms and 4 red belly in the same tank and they coexisted for about a year until I got bored of them and sold them. Now I am trying it again with bigger fish and I currently have 6 6" Red belly with 2 diamond rhoms(6" and 8"). I started it on July 14th and so far so good. Just couple bit fins as they were establishing their territories. I wouldn't suggest trying this as it can go South pretty fast and you would have to have another tank available just in case.

Good luck with that and let us know how it goes

Can i get more info about your previous experiment? How big were they? How big was the tank? Planted?

How big is the tank in your current experiment?
