Wondering if there's a way to differentiate between the two from a young (2") size. and what differences there will be in size and shape.
 
If there are some points or bars on them, you can identify them :

Points : S. rhombeus
Bars (on the whole flanks) : S. compressus
Bars (not under the lateral line) : S. altuvie

But keep in mind that Serrasalmus are very difficult to ID when they are under 2-2.5" ;)
 
Well Dogg, you know it aint a rhom if it has a red belly, that's fo sho!
 
I have a terrible time telling piranha apart and need pics so I can do a sibe by side comparison.
 
i have only seen 2 piranha's black piranha and a RBP and they are supper easy to tell apart.
 
Here is a pic of the compressus from a site called Angelfire, the other two are an adult and a juvie rhombeus from the Piranhasen site. none of the pics mentioned who took them.
