I bought a small portion of Riccia Moss so I can make a bed with it in my planted tank, and I was wondering if I could put it in a 10 gallon tank (with a filter) and put it in a zip-lock bag with holes in it (so it doesnt get messy and get in the filter and stuff) and let it float under my 15watt light. Would that be efficient to grow it out a bit before I use it?

I'm trying something similar with various cuttings/scraps of plants using WC water to provide nutrients 02, C02 and a clip-on reading light with a 'plant bulb' from home depot.

Tell me how that goes, I just started yesterday ill feed you results if i see any :D

I setup a 10g with a heater, airstone (more for water circulation than oxygenation) and a Hagen C02 kit. The tank is filled usng 'old' water from my other tanks when I do water changes - bringing in Nitrates. I'm using a 'clip on' desk/reading light with a 'plant bulb' (incandescent) for lighting and no hood. Water evaporation means it has to be topped up once or twice a week so the nitrates keep being replenished as well.
Any plant cuttings, or plants that aren't doing so well in other tanks or plant 'bits' leftover from planting, I put into the 10g.
I have a 6g that has 6 endler/guppy hybrids, about 12 RCS and lots of Nerite snails that I've been 'dumping' plant offcuts etc into and they all seem to come back strong so decided to try with a 10g.

Hey man, i left the riccia floating for about 2 days, and i think there may have been an increase in amount, but not significantly. I do notice that a lot of it has died (sunk down and lost green color) so I did the netting technique on a few rocks. It's just up to it to grow now. I use nutri-grow coralife light (not too high in wattage but it should suffice) and a fluval mini CO2 injector i bought for 30 bucks. It already has issues....

Riccia will grow like crazy in a decent amount of light and CO2. The key though is the CO2. Try a DIY CO2 set up and leave it floating so it will be close to the light.

I've sold so much of that stuff on ebay. It covers a 55 gallon in a matter of weeks after starting with a 2 inch piece. I finally got rid of the last of it but now I kind of miss it.

I don't think the plastic bag idea will work at all. I know what you mean about it getting caught in the filter but it makes more sense to put a piece of sponge or net over the filter intake.

My riccia does not grow. It just dies slowly. But then, all my plants just die slowly.
