I’m trying to find out what the temps of the waters are that my Oscars are from. I know the average yearly temp of the region is 31 Celsius. I’m not sure if the Oscars were collected right from the river, connecting slough or adjacent pond, etc. Does anyone have any thoughts?

The water temp of the Rio Negro ( Rio Branco is a tributary of the Rio Negro) has an average water temp of 22'C (74'F).
The difference between air and water temp has to do with the waters flow, which tends to cool the water.
If you do plan to go to the upper temp end, consider that higher water temps tend to favor pathogenic bacteria, so adding tannins to make the warm water less hospitable to the bacteria, might be a consideration.

Where the fish are caught affects the temp as you suggest in the original post. While the main river might be cooler, the shallows and small streams feeding it where apistos, dwarf pikes, and discus are caught get to 28C/82F.

Not to say oscars would come from the same super shallow streams apistos do of course, it just shows how the same area can vary in it's temps across a small area.
