Rio Hondo Carpinte Update

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've had bad luck with them, but they are very nice looking fish. Even small, they have great color. Mine seem disease prone.....not sure if it's the fish, or just bad luck.

Thanks - Hey, I've noticed your tank (very impressive) and I'm thinking about doing the new tanks I'm working on w/ just socks and pond matrix. Would you do it again? Any changes? Do you ever get any readings of amonia and does it really help w/ nitrate reduction once it settles in?

Thanks Keith. I'd definitely do socks and pond matrix again. I don't get any ammonia readings, but I don't have Rays, I don't have Arowana, bunch of P-Bass. My tank is 540 Gallons with just Vieja. I'm lightly stocked.

I think socks/matrix would work for ray tanks, but I don't really know. I also have a drip system, too. That and light stock, it's not even fair, man. I have 4 socks, so I change 'em out every 3-4 weeks. It's incredibly low maintenance considering the size of the tank and the amount of food going into it to feed the fish.

As for nitrate reduction from matrix, I don't buy that. I think it's just a quality media that will last a long time, has the right size pores for bacteria. I haven't noticed any nitrate reduction, but then again, i run a drip system, too.

Thanks and appreciate the info, how many liters of pond matrix do you use now - do you have any clarity issues w/ the socks, or does it stay just as clear if you were using a bunch of canisters?

Clarity is the same as with canisters. I use 150 micron socks and 200 micron socks. Water's clear, I can see all the way through an 8 foot tank from one side to the other, 44 inches wide, I can clearly make out every dot in fish's fins when they're at the far back wall of the tank.

If you think about it, water's gonna be MORE clear than with canisters. I have MUCH higher turnover rate, and the socks filter much smaller particles than a canister does. I use poret foam in my cans, and they have much more porosity than 100-200 micron filter socks.

I use 12 liters of Pond Matrix in nylon laundry bags.

Thanks, I'm sold - w/ 20L of Pond Matrix going for under $100, I'm going to do that and put like 60L in - maybe I'd see a nitrate reduction then - thanks for the help
