I'm down to 3 Rio Mag's in my 300. Two females and the big guy. Culled a bunch and then the other two at about 4" have been moved to a 75G split for observation and safe keeping just in case. The two in the 75 are not sexed. When I had the other two Umbee in the tank the bigger female would stay on one side of the tank and the other female and male cleared a bunch of the blasting sand and appeared to be paired up. I saw a few times the females would posture with each other, (damn that blonde color is pretty) and the male just kind of kicked backed and watched. Now it appears the bigger female has been hanging out with the male a lot more and the other female has taken up residents on the other side of the tank. I have some big 10" terra cotta in the tank with 4" holes drilled to help keep them somewhat out of sight, but it is quite interesting watching the dance. I just hope I am observant enough and have enough hiding spots to pull the loser in time.

Quick update on this. Still have roughly 20 baby fry swimming around getting a bit bigger. Over the last week or so activity started going up in the tank and I was seeing a lot more aggression towards the other gal from both male and female. At one point the other gal was at the top of the tank I thought maybe they had tired her out enough I could get her moved easily into the sump, but by the time I got some space cleared out she was back hiding in her terracotta pot. The next day mom laid and is now fanning and dad is back to his friendly self with his 'gal pal'. Next time they spawn I will have the net ready to grab her in the event she runs to the top again.

Well, it finally happened a couple weeks ago. I came home and the girl friend was exhasted up at the top of the tank and looking like she was ready to hop out so I nabbed her with the net and moved her down to the sump. Took her awhile to recover, but she is looking better. Now it appears the female is being overly aggressive with the male. Is this unusual? His back tail looks like it has been split a few times and she seems pretty aggressive towards him. I always thought males were the aggressors?

Gorgeous. Thanks for sharing the pictures. It's great to see a big aquarium put to good use. I'm not surprised that the female gets aggressive. Hopefully she doesn't provoke a fight she'll likely lose.
