South Central...
This morning I lost my most favorite fish, the fish that got me into the world of keeping monster fish - my Florida Gar. I bought him in February of 2000 so I would have had him for almost 11 years. He was about 5" long when I got him and died at about 18" or so inches long. I'm still not exactly sure what happened. I fed him around 9pm last night and when I came back around 11PM to turn off the lights he was floating on his side struggling to get upright. He was the gentle giant in my fish tank....unless you happened to be a tiny little fish. You never think you'd get so attached to a fish but apparently it can happen. RIP buddy.

Great fish. Sorry for your loss.

I am sorry for your loss... you've had him for a long time...... I feel for you :(

Very sorry to hear this. Dare I say, 10+ years of keeping a fish is out of control impressive! I know that it probably does not help, but I think that you have done a fantastic job raising your gar, and gave it a much better life then the extreme vast majority of us fellow fishkeepers could have done! I think that you have EARNED the priviledge to get back up on that bike and ride again.

May you be as blessed with as good fortune with your next Gar as you enjoyed with this one. Good luck, and please don't beat yourself up!

Thanks guys. The whole experience happened so rapidly. I dropped some pellets in his tank like I've done a thousand times before and he ate just fine. When I found him swimming funny a few hours later I thought he might have stunned himself by smacking the side of the tank or something. I turned off the lights to keep him calm hoping that he'd pull through the night but sadly it didn't happen. He was definitely my most favorite fish and a great conversation starter when people stopped by to visit.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!
