went last friday and picked up a JD female for my male. so today i was looking at her and it looked like she was beginning to have ick. so i put her in the hospital tank and started treating her. i then left for the rodeo and came back at midnight to a dried up female jack full of eggs on my bedroom floor. now im sick to my stomach and cant sleep. RIP my JD that was not here long enough to have a name.

Dang, sorry man.

Sorry to hear about that.

Did you move the fish from your main tank into the hospital? If you saw the ich on the fish in your main tank, there's a good chance your display tank is infected. I would keep a close eye on that tank and raise temps to 86F and add 1 tblspn of salt per 5 gallons if you see any white spots.

From what I have learned its a common misconception that just because one fish has ick, the others will too. Granted if the ick is severe enough, then others are likely to get it, but something to consider is that all tanks have ick. Its the fish immune system that stops them from getting it. Every time a fish in my tank has gotten ick its usually due to thier immune system being lowered from the stress placed on them when they are moved to a new enviroment.

Here's a good read on the topic of Ichthyophthirius multifiliis. They present a pretty strong argument that Ich does not have a dormant stage. I have never had an outbreak of Ich without introducing new fish or plants that could have contained the nasty bug. But I dunno, if you've had an outbreak without any new fish or potential other carriers being added to your tank, then that's a pretty strong argument too.

I'm sorry to hear about your JD female. I know you tried to help her.

I'm curious, what did you use to treat her in the hospital tank.
It must've been a little strong & uncomfortable to make her jump out. Unless something else spooked her. But to be safe next time get lids to keep this from happening.
