I went out today, excited, and bought myself a gorgeous little gold ring butterfly pleco. They're fast, so I thought he'd survive...but I was wrong. My piranha still got him, even though there was a rock to slip behind and everything. I just found his head at the bottom of the tank =[

Are there ANY plecos that can survive in the same tank as a piranha? The tank would be so much cleaner with one but for ****'s sake, I don't want to throw away another poor pleco's life unless I know it can survive, so please help me out.

P.S. Anyone want a free piranha? v.v;

sigh wish someone told you beforehand.... this was inevitable. Another pleco down at the hands of piranha keepers. Just so you know, plecos aren't cleaners, chances are the one you bought, wouldn't clean anything at all, and there is no tankmate... not even pleco, that will last with piranha.

I'm not quite sure what you think a pleco would do for your tank?

Clean the gunge at the bottom of the tank mainly, as well as eat the leftovers of Attila's victims so they don't rot at the bottom of the tank((he sometimes leaves a few guts here and there)). He used to be in my office's tank with three other black piranha, and they got along fine with the big pleco that lived in there. They chased him every once in a while when he got too close, but overall they left him alone.

the piranha forum is full of "my pleco got eaten". Some managed to stay alive for a year or two, but inevitably it happens. They may help eat any uneaten food... but clean the "gunge"... not so sure about that. Maybe a gravel vac is more appropriate for your needs?

Haha, it looks like I won't have much choice but to stick with that. Thanks for your help though, i'll never attempt to give Attila tank mates again.

it's a shame... but to be honest, sounds quite lucky you had rhoms that lived together.

They weren't mine originally. It was one red bellied piranha((Which is the one I have now)) and three blacks. They coexisted alright, until someone took out the smaller black one since he was getting picked on and they freaked out and killed the third black lol.

Another wonderful Pleco post, I was going to flame this person as this type of posts infuriate me...ill informed or just inbred .:nilly: :irked:

DAVO great job of keeping your composure with a another fish keeper, who starts the thread like RIP Pretty Pleco,. I'd like to feed him a spoonful of Grunge...........

I'm done.......
