Riparium Foundation Package: Plants & Accessories for Larger Setups
Awesome biological filtration in your monster tank with easy-care riparium plants.
This combination package includes two kinds of plants and riparium accessories that work very well as "foundation" elements for larger, open-top riparium setups. By combining the sprawling emersed stem plant,Bacopa sp., and the sturdy umbrella sedge, Cyperus 'Baby Tut', with other plants as accents you can develop a riparium layout like the one that I had going in this 120-gallon setup.
The Cyperus 'Baby Tut' can grow to about 30" tall and the Bacopa sp.--I have not been able to determine the species of this plant, but it is the best riparium stem that I have tried--will quickly grow to cover the riparium planting accessories with a dense carpet of bright green foliage. I would suggest that you use a tank with a footprint of at least 36" X 18" to grow these riparium plants. A 30 or 40 Breeder would be an excellent choice.
Both of these plants grow best with moderate-bright lighting. A pair of HO T5 strips with good reflectors will be plenty of light for them. I recommend the kinds of single T5 strips sold in hydroponics stores as especially good choices for growing plants in ripariums because it is so easy to hang them up and adjust the height. You might need to raise the lights up higher as the 'Baby Tut' grows up and out of the top of the tank. Both of these plants benefit from root fertilization. It is a good idea to use a Root Medic capsule or similar root fertilizer in the planter cup.
The following list provides a breakdown with each item along with the values that I used for calculating the package total cost:
This sums to $31.00 for the whole package. For a full layout you will eventually want to have several planters of both the 'Baby Tut' and the Bacopa, but if you grow them right you will soon have plenty of propagation material for these two plants. The Bacopa is very easy to multiply by simply snipping and re-rooting sections of stem. When the Bacopa 'Baby Tut" grows several new leaves and fills the planter with roots you can pop it out, trim the roots, split the plant crown in two, and then re-plant each division in its own planter.
Here are some pictures to illustrate everything included in this package. When I get the first package ready to ship out I will try to get a picture of everything all together.
This shot shows a group of Bacopa sp. freshly planted in a hanging planter with the trellis raft and substrates.
With time the Bacopa sp. grow to quickly cover the raft with a dense carpet of foliage. This makes a real nice effect in the riparium background area.
Here is another picture of that 120-gallon riparium. The Cyperus 'Baby Tut' is the grassy plant up near the top rim. This is a great plant for adding vertical dimension to the riparium layout. It is one of the easiest riparium plants to grow.
