You got grills for your jag? I've never seen fish all blinged out. ;)

It kind of depends on the extent of the injury, obviously gills are a major part of a fishes respiratory system, so if the injury is severe enough then there's a good chance he's a goner.
Just from the fact that you said it was ripped OFF, it doesn't sound too good. :(

here are some pics best i could get. He seems to be acting fine just breathing alot heavier to me it seems like something so serious to where id think it would slow him down but hes still activaly protecting his fry. Im setting up a quarentine tank for him.

Hard to tell the extent from the pics, though yeah, it looks pretty bad.

You may not know how bad it is for awhile. Like you said he's acting fairly normal now and protecting his fry, but in a few days the stress of the injury could overcome him. It also may depend on whether or not anything major was injured. Sometimes the injury can look very severe but other than looking really gruesome nothing vital was hurt.

Basically you won't know unless you just watch and wait. Good luck.

He'll live, but not the same. As long as food is digested and oxygen is abosrbed, he'll be able to defend his fry.

I had it happen to one of my bichirs. Until I saw him heal, I would have put money on it that it wouldn't heal. Now there is no injury visible.
