Ime, my females who were larger almost always beat or killed the smaller males, while spawning.

I don't see why a divider couldn't be used if they end up breeding she will spend more energy spawning then growing and he will catch her in size in no time. Then you will have to keep an eye out for her. He will want to spawn often and could put the hurt on her.
