Okay, I really like the natural look of using river rocks as a substrate. But, I also know that the river rocks will collect un-eaten food and waste. I have an extra 55 gallon tank that has river rocks as a substrate. No fish in their yet, still cycling. I was thinking what if I put some pool sand on top of the river rocks. Not to cover all of the rocks but enough to cover about 1 inch over the smaller rocks with the larger rocks still showing. Does anyone think this would work? I'm thinking that I can still have a natural look with the bigger rocks still showing but the sand would cover the top of the smaller rocks. That way, there will be a layer of sand that will keep un-eaten food and waste from going down into the space of the smaller rocks and I can just vacuum the sand because the food and waste won't get stuck in the small spaces of the littler rocks. Will this work? Ed.
