was thinking about swapping my current light colored sand out for some darker colored river rocks as a substrate. would i need an undergravel filter system for this type of setup? or is there another method of cleaning the fish dropping in my tank during water changes?

I use river rocks in three of my tanks. It works fine, just siphon it like you would any other tank bottom.

I also have river rock and agree with SandTiger....just do the same thing.

The typical methods of gravel cleaning work just fine; I doubt you will fiind river rock is more maint intensive or more difficult to keep clean.

IMO, for a cheap price, you can't go wrong with a UGF but not everyone will agree. Of course, they won't be able to provide a valid arguement as to why they wouldn't recommend a UGF but that's another topic for another time.:D

I don't see why not. Most of them are safe.

If one of your fish start dying, just keep in mind it may be because of the substance one of your river rocks is made of. A river is a large biological system with an ongoing flow of water that doesn't really circulate the minerals. However, I would not have to worry about it.

Go ahead, use them! A couple of users before me had used them, and I haven't got any problem with them while I was keeping frogs.

I just bought a 120 gal and it came with a UGF but had no instructions. I already have filtration so I wasn't planning of using it but how does it work. I also a sand for a substrate, can it be used with sand?
