iv started building a stand for a 20G long. im trying to figure out what to put in the tank once i get it up and running. im throwing around the idea of making it into a river tank and getting some hillstream loaches... iv wanted to keep some for a long time now :) anyway, im wondering what other fish would be okay in a river tank with them.

would black kuhli loaches do fine in that environment?

what about banjo catfishes (iv got 2 and they're just the cutest things)?

any stocking suggestions are appreciated.

Are you in the US? If so, consider getting some darters. Most are from swift stream environments and should do great with hillstream loaches. Also, some small cyprinids such as zebra danios, white clouds, or dace would work well.

I'd avoid the Kuhli Loach. Pangio species tend to favour very slow moving and still waters with lots of leaf litter and silt/sand/fine gravel substrates. They would be battered in a river tank setup.

As said the smaller Danio species should be fine and indeed will relish the high flow and higher oxygenation in the tank.

Research the species you do like that prefer fast moving hillstream setups and ensure they are compatible temperature and chemistry wise and also fine territorially. Most of the common hillstreams actually prefer the water temp around 20°C-25°C but each one varies accordingly.
