Hello. I am planning on setting up a river tank or something similiar. The tank is going to be standard 90 gallon tank(48"x18"x24"). It will be filtered by 2 penn plax cascade canisters, the 1200 and the 500, together suitable for a 180 gallon tank, both filters will have spray bars. The tank will be half way to 2 thirds filled with water, then the back wall will have spray bars(waterfalls) almost all along the back. The tank will have smooth river rocks for a substrate that will slop up out of water at one end of the tank, this will be the basking spot for a red ear slider turtle and will have a reptile light over it. Now there will be a deep end for the turtle(where the rocks are normal, not slopped),a shallow end(where the rocks start to slop) and a basking spot(where the rocks come completely out of water.) On the basking spot there will be a fake plant, so that the turtle can get some shade and also bask. All along the back of the tank will be sturdy, fake plants, wood and rocks for frogs or whatever to climb out of the water onto. On the side of the tank opposite of the basking spot, there will be a bubble wall. The lighting will be a normal flourescent light and a reptile light. The tank will be heated with a 300w eheim heater. The tank will have feeder goldfish and a red ear slider. Can I keep any sort of frog or something? And do you think this setup will work? Thanks

How big is this turtle?

If small <3", you'll be ok for a while. Otherwise you'll be doing W/Cs several times a week :(.

Are you sure the filters will draw water up that high? They're designed for 1-2" lift.

Put the light on a timer.

300w heater may be a bit much unless this is going in a cold area. The lamp will help heat somewhat too.

Make sure the rocks are small enough for it to get it's claws into to climb up without trouble.

Keep us posted on this project,

Dr Joe

Its really not safe to keep Turtles with fish frogs or anything really. Red Ear Sliders are REALLLY HUNGRY ALL THE TIME :).

Why do you want feeder goldfish (Coldwater fish)?
1. They're ugly
2. They fare better in cooler temps
3. Your turtle may have a go at them if he's a bit big.

Cenecker: The turtles only have a go at fish that they think may be a probable prey option. I've seen them housed with oscars, large cats and such in bigger tanks many a time before.

Turtle will eat any tankmates. End of. The one thing I have learned about RES in the 9 years I've been keeping is that if it can happen, it will.

If you seriously want to keep a turtle, then go about it properly, don't try to make it a 'river tank' or a community, they need a setup all to themselves.

You will also probably need a 120G tank just for one slider, for life. If you still are really set on keeping one, do plenty of research. Here is a link to a topic I made about housing them on another forum, which I highly recommend should you have any questions:
Housing the Red Eared Slider

Good luck,
Paul
