I'm taking a trip here in about a month. I was wondering if anyone knows what cichlids if any, i would encounter? What lakes etc... I know i would have to pay for a license to import etc etc... but i was wondering if anyone has ever been here and caught any fish. Thanks

I took my honeymoon there. Cave diving and scouting the sunken pools "sinotias" (spelling) and all we saw were very, very small fish and no cichlids. Beautiful landscape though. I am not sure they would let you fish or take anything from the main areas. The people are really protective about the land and water there. For sight seeing, make sure you hit up Talum. < Stunning place to see. We did the quad rides through the jungle too. I would recommend that to anyone. That whole area was torn up by a hurricane about 3 years ago (right before we went) take lots of pics and post em. I would love to see how that well area has bounced back. GL..

the sunken pools are called "cenotes" . . . very cool (literally), and worth a trip . . . but no cichlids in there

as long as we're spell-checking, the ruin he mentioned is "Tulum" :) . . . and you can usually do a combo-trip that takes you to see both the cenotes and Tulum

if you want to see native cichlids, you'll need to check rivers and lagoons . . . Mayan cichlids should be the most likely, and maybe Firemouths

FWIW, you can see plenty of Mayan cichlids in Florida canals and retention ponds
