I use ro/di water for my nanoreef, and I'm thinking about using it for my S. spilo tank. It would be better than using treated tap water, and maybe easier if I don't have to treat it or add anything to buffer it. Do I have to treat/buffer the ro/di water with anything or can I use direct from the filter???

Thanks,
Dan

Usually you don't want to use RO/DI water for fresh because it is too pure and stripped of minerals. Plus the pH can wing esily without a buffer.

With salt it works great since you are adding only what you want to the water.

Agreed, far too much is taken out.

What's wrong with your tap water? For most people just adding prime will make the water fine for the fish. It's cheap and easy to use.

nothing is wrong with my tap water. I was just thinking the ro/di water might be better becuase it is pure. I guess i was just thinking too much. I'll stick with treated tap.

RO/DI is met with a bit of resistance from the fresh water crew by default i would say, cause realisticly & ritualisticly its no picnic.

Initial unit costs, testing equipment, longevity factors, maintenance factors, time factors, storage & mixing factors, mineral, electrolyte and buffer factors.... and thats all before its seen the inside of your fish tank. Then on top you've got to perform your routine tests. .vs. a bucket of tap & your done. I can honestly see why people choose option B!

Not all of us love the forced scientist effect. They just want to enjoy it for what it is.

Coming from marine principles myself, I for one wouldn't have it any other way, however you have to know whats required & be prepared to see it through. If your sitting on the fence, better to focus on maximum potential gains with environment first.

Just my spin on the subject anyways.
