Rock bass....i think

The red eye is usually pretty pronounced, also usually a much blotchier pattern to them than the fish you caught

deff not a rock bass. i catch usually about 20 every fishing trip.

I agree with the others, that is a Green Sunfish. I have a 4" male whose coloration is exactly like yours.

Green Sunfish, very agressive behavioral pattern. I have 5 in my pond with a bluegill, a green-sunfishXBluegill Hybrid and a bluegill. Very great fish to keep.

thats cool. i saw half the eye was red and noticed the black color and large mouth and just took a shot in the dark. thanks

Im guessing based on the time of the year that you probably caught it in the shallows? Lepomis cyanellus should be on the beds around now.

+1 again, i catch tons of rock bass around here and that doesnt look anything like them. green sunfish.
