I just picked up some rock. The guy I picked it up from stored it in 5 gallon buckets changing out the water weekly. It has been this way for about three weeks. I figure it needs to be cured at this point. The good news is it cost me about the same as dry rock goes for around here.

I have an established tank with about 50 pounds of liverock and 80 pounds of crushed coral. Am I safe adding the rock at a couple of pounds at a time, or will this throw my system off?

you will probably cause a cycle in your tank if you do it all at once. i have been adding pieces of rock to my tank every couple weeks, probably an average of 7 or 8 pounds a piece i add in at a time. and i have not gone through a cycle, at least it doenst seem like it cause my tank hasnt been cloudy and i havent had diatom outbreaks

you will cause a cycle because he may have changed the water BUT the rock on the bottom unless he cleaned each rock every change will be filled with debris, detritus, and die off and ammonia build up I would cure it in a sturdy rubbermaid tub with fresh saltwater and heavily aerate it and have activated carbon in there and change the water 100% a week but if you put it in there and test after a week and no ammonia, nitrate, nitrite it should be good for adding just be aware you still might get a small cycle in your display tank.

I put all of the rock into my QT (I have never put copper in there) and have a sponge filter runing. I will take the suggestion to test the water prior to adding the rock.

Some of the pieces (porbobly the ones that were on top) look very clean. I may add a couple of pounds of them a week. Mr reef, would you agree with Jus that adding a little at a time should be ok? The faster the QT tank gets taken down, the happier the wife.

a little at a time when your parameter's are good would be helpful but you can just do all at once when the parameter's are zero and do a 20% water change on the display after all the new rock is in so you can siphon out and debris stir up and replenish the water with fresh saltwater.

remember to use a soft brush like a toothbrush when curing LR...

wow the cc thing is new to me!

Sounds to me like the crushed corral thing is one side of a story. As long as the tank is properly maintained, crushed coral should be fine. The only concern I can think of is if you have sand sifters, or fish that bury themselves. Otherwise it seems to me the crushed coral is fine.

I currently have crushed coral and no problems with nitrates. I currently am not running a protein skimmer, or anything else to reduce them. I'm sure there is a reasonable argument against CC, but there are also reasonable arguments against sand.

crushed coral isn't good for fish like gobies, blennies, hawkfish, and so on due to sharp corners that can and do puncture and harm them if unable to remove get some fine sugar sand and put on top of the crushed coral to keep it from harming your fish or inverts.
