im trying to get some crazy looking rox from all over but they r just to much money in the LFS. does anyone have a good source for them or know of any types of places that have them for cheap or free after all they r just rocks right:screwy:??? also dose anyone know if those garden rocks that have those sparkley little specks in them are ok to use in a fishtank???

just go to a landscaping company I bought 50lbs of slate for like 10 bucks here in sc. They usually have a pretty good selection too. The place here sells everything from river rocks to marble. gl

If you are talking about Schist rocks - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schist - then yes they will be fine in your tank.

I'm with Mystix, any time I'm out at the beach or river I keep an eye out for interesting rocks. Sometimes you even find interesting stuff on the side of the road, especially around big road cuttings through hills etc. I guess it depends where you live of course.

Main thing to avoid is limestone rock, it will mess with the pH and hardness of your water. OK if you are keeping rift lake cichlids, not so good otherwise. Test by dropping some vinegar on the rock, if it fizzes and bubbles then it contains lime and best not to use it.

I always go to my local stone shop called "brighton stone and fire place." Last time I went I had 68lbs. @ $.22 a lb. When I weighed it it was 68lbs.. The guy that helped me carry it in to the store told the guy at the counter 38lbs and after the guy walked back out the guy at the counter was like.. "did he say 30?" And I was just like yeah.. 30. I ended up getting it for like $6 haha

but yeah try your local stone shop. Mine always has like 5-6 huge piles of nice busted up stuff and its all $.22 a pound. I'm not sure if its all safe for your tanks but both kinds I got seem to be fine.. I just wash it real good with gravel wash first.

Some landscaping stores have an array of rocks. But the cheapest alternative? Flog them from the river, lake, sea, whatever. You can tell they arent harmful, they are already shaped by the water current. Sometimes you can find some quite nice colours too.

Aquarium rock is, in actuality, created in a dark forboding lab on the outskirts of new deli by specially trained scientists under controled conditions...

LOL rocks are rocks...like everyones said...keep your eyes open. Thats where all of these 'Special' rocks come from anyway...somebody found intresting rocks...got out the hose and then labled them for sale.

Landscaping centers are great places to get cool rocks.

thanx alot guy u r all awsome :headbang2:headbang2:headbang2only thing is got to find a stone shop lol, and one more thing did any of u guys ever use that sparkled stone and how does it look in a aquarium??? dose shine well or dose it fade out in the water???

It usually gets covered in time but it looks great for a while.

Yeah, they get covered in algae after a while, you can take them out and give them a scrub any time of course, or employ a few small plecos to help keep them clean ;)
