so i found a nice 4-5" smooth rock from my buddies front yard. i wanna use it for my firemouth tank, trying to get them to breed. my question is what do i do to treat it? im guessin boil it but for how long?

I clean my rocks i find with a 1-1/water-bleach solution. I simply soak it for a few minutes (in the water-bleach solution), then scrub it (with the water-bleach solution), soak it in normal tap water, and then scrub it with hot tap water again, let it dry, then throw it in the tank. No repercusions yet...

Prob easier ways, but this is how i clean mine, doesnt hurt the fish at all from what i have seen...

thx for the reply, but im kinda sketch w/ the bleach. im sure it works but id like to see if theres any diff methods.

Wash with vinegar and distilled water solution for the initial cleaning and scrubbing. When your rock is clean, use distilled water to really rinse it off. I strongly suggest, not just dumping it in your tank and praying at this point. Get a large container, fill it with distilled water and do a water test on it. Add your rock and let it sit for a few days, and again test the water. Compare your two results, paying close attention to your PH. You work hard to keep your water chemistry in order, lets not let your rock throw it off. If everything is roughly the same I would go ahead, and add to your tank. If It is not, you can "cure" your rock with water changes to your container with the rock (great more water changes) untill you get your rock to stabilize. Best of luck to you.

o ya i never said i was going to drop it in, thats what i asked how to cure it

Out of all the rocks and driftwood I've been through, IMO, Just use hot water and soak over a couple days. Wash and put fresh hot water in accordingly until water is clear.
- All said and done :)

right on kyle, thats what i did w/ my driftwood. wasnt sure if it would work on rocks too

Lol don't worry about bleach, just make sure to mix with water. And rinse afterwards. It will be fine
