I was just wondering where everyone gets their rock work and slate from for their tanks? Buying from an aquarium store at X per pound just doesn't seem like a viable option. How safe is it to pull local rocks/stones up (Ohio, limestone mainly) for a SA/CA Cichlid tank? What are the dangers? Thanks in advance....

Do Lowes/HD have slate/rocks available?

I collect my own from around lakes.

Home depot 12''x12''x1/4'' slate tiles $2.00 a piece

i go to the Alpine Rock and Block. it sells all sorts of rock and sand and gravel of all sizes for landscaping purposes. i just got 60 pounds of sand for $1.97 and all sorts of slate and goldmine river rocks and some red lava rock for about $12. at the LFS the rocks run about $2.99 a pound, i got all my rock for like 19 cents a pound. as long as you take care to completely clean the stuff its all good

I live in the "Slate Belt" region of PA. I can walk to an old quarry and bring back as much slate as I want. Maybe I should start selling that stuff to you guys hahaha.

I either get it from local streams and lakes or buy it
We actually have a "rock store" down the strreet from me that always has some really cool stuff for a little bit of nothing.(we take the scrap that they dont want)

Out on a standard everyday sales run for me, and low nd behold I saw a landscape materials vendor, which had some very nice riverrock, slate etc. Picked all I wanted for $5. I wish everything work as such....
