Magic Place Of Wonders And Delights
Sorry if i repeated this post but i can't find it anywhere i thought i posted but guess not :S anyway i was wondering could i go to a river get some random rock's then scrub and boil them would this be ok??? any suggestions as my tank is really boring at the momet.

Go ahead and grab them. Pour vinegar on them and if it fizzes up, its limestone and best suited for african cichlid tanks. Otherwise, just boil them and clean them very well.

boil yes

JUST DONT BAKE! (boom!)

hmmm i wonder if pressure cooking would be safe, or if you'd run into the same problems as baking? when you boil them i assume you're not heating up the inside of the rock enough to vaporize (expand) water trapped inside the rock and cause it to explode. when boiling a rock the water doesn't get over 212 fahr (100 C) so it would take a long time to heat the rock up to 212, causing the water inside the rock to vaporize and make the rock explode. When baking at high temp it's easy to get the rock hot enough to heat the water inside it up causing it to explode... pressure cooking might cause the same problems?

I say go to Home Depot in the garden section and look for Mexican Beach Pebbles. They are basically the same round silver/gray shiny river rocks. They are for sale for $9 a bag which is I think good enough for a 60G

Boiling a rock doesnt shatter/explode it. All it is, is getting extreme heat to kill any potential nasties living on or in the rock.
