I recently did a whole new aquascape to my aquarium with rocks sand pebbles and plants and one large piece of driftwood. over the last week i noticed a little murkiness when i removed the rocks there was food trapped in there and what appeard to be some sort of fuzz probably decayed food.

So last night i removed to rocks and did a huge water change around 70% and vaccumed everything. There is still some murkiness so i am going to do another 50% water change today.

I was just wondering has anyone else ever had this problem??

P.S Nothing appeared to happen to my P's they are still very active and eating great.

Nearly everyone that keeps predatory/messy fish with décor goes through this problem at some point. Some time ago I had a goldfish carcass, half eaten, wedged on bog wood for three days unnoticed. Though it had not got to the fuzzy stage like yours, boy did it add a smell to the tank when you got close to the surface. Definably messed up the water stats for a few days as well as the cloudy water. The thing is to learn your lesson, and always check the tank after each feeding. I also tried to go minimalist on décor as well. Black background, black substrate, one centre piece of décor with a few plants – hence easy to find uneaten food.

Thankfully red bellies can be the hardiest and forgiving of the piranha species, glad there was no fatalities inspectahdeck. What was the uneaten food exactly?

the uneaten food was a chunk of shrimp that somehow got under a rock so i took the rocks out and the driftwood ( no matter how long it soaks it still turns water brownish) no all that is in there is sand and plants and a fake piece of what is supposed to be drift wood

When I clean my LMB tank, I move all the deco and vacuum, and always find food that he and the pleco missed.

yea same here thats how i found the food trapped in the rocks but unfortunatly i only usually do a water change every week thats why it messed up my water

you shouldn't do quite that large of a waterchange a 70% waterchange could send you back into cycling.....and then u run a risk of killing ur fish....also the driftwood may or maynot stop releasing tannins.....but a good thing about that is the p's actually like that......they are used to it in the wild and its supposed to calm them some and make them more relaxed.....basically ur getting black water extract without the bottom....
