Has anybody ever dealt with this company to buy discus from? And also my LFS said "if a discus has pigeon blood in it, it won't take care of their fry" Is this true? If it is how are the breeders breeding them? Are they harder to breed? I was wanting to get a breeding mated pair of checkerboards from Rocky Mountain Discus.....good choice?

isn't pigeon blood a color? i think it would BE pigeon blood, as oppose to having pigeon blood in it. yeah i've heard they're more territorial during breeding in comparison to other discuss

i know nothing about that company though. sorry

Yes I understand pigeon blood is a color so I am asking if that color is a dominant color are they much harder to breed. My discus each have their own tanks so they would have nothing to be territorial about right? Anybody have experience with this particular discus called the checkerboard? Or experience with rocky mountain discus?

Pigeon bloods discus and all the pigeon variations(checkerboards, tangerines, red dragons, etc) don't get darker in color when they breed like other strains of discus. So it's a little harder for the fry to find their parents for food. Keep the pigeon pairs in a tank with a light colored background and they won't be any harder to breed than other strains of discus.

Parents darken to attract their fry. Some pigeons have trouble turning dark unless they have a lot of peppering on them. Albino fish cannot turn dark either. It's best to keep pairs like this in tanks that are painted solid white or pale blue, and cover all the dark sponges in the tank with white nylon bags or stockings to help the fry find the parents. Lowering the water level to just above the parents' dorsal fins will help too.

Having said that, I don't think there are any reports of a certain color morph of discus being a better or worse parent than any other type. Some fish are great parents, some are not so great, but it's the individual fish and not the color variety.

Take Hans's advice. I believe I recommended you buy a pair from Hans in your other thread if you wanted the "real" deal. Buy elsewhere and be burned...Bill
