I am in the planning stages of a large (3000 gallon plus) freshwater river tank. The tank will house large and small river fish like gars, catfish, bass, crappie, ect.

I don't really see the tank have much in the way of plants.

If I integrate the use of RO or RODI water for top offs and water changes how much will I have to worry about pH control or mineral depletion and such?

How can I go about handling this depletion on a large scale?

RODI water in freshwater is going to remove minerals and just about all the "impurities" that 95% of freshwater fish need to be healthy. Seems you are aware of this though I would be curious why use RODI at all?

As for PH it should be fairly neutral with RODI, but with the lower KH the PH is going to more likely to take wild swings which is clearly bad. The fish you mention are not really "soft" water fish.

Not sure the best way to handle it there are lots of things to add minerals back to the tank; If it was me I would just put the wastewater from RODI into the tank that should help with the mineral depletion (ya ya I know that kind of ruins the point).

Well...most of my experience comes from saltwater so my first urge is to use RODI.

I guess ultimately the whole idea depends on the quality of the water coming in through the plumbing. Thing is even if this water is perfectly acceptable nothing says that there isn't going to be a day when the water supply is tainted in some way.

The feel I am getting from research at this point is to use RODI for top offs and and treated tap water for water changes.

If anyone has any solid ideas for me or a link to check out some relevant info please let me know.

Where are the monster fish keepers??? I do appreciate the help I have gotten but I thought there would be a lot more support for this sort of question in these forums.
