Is RODI water safe to use for FW fish? Could it have a negative effect on them?

Most that have high ph hard water utilize them for sensitive soft water species.

If any of them are from the Amazon for example the system would be good for them especially if you wanted them to breed and have more success with the fry.

The amount you have to add is tiny, so whether adding a little bit of unfiltered tap water (5%? 10%?) or a small amount of pure powder is enough, it shouldn't be difficult to satisfy the BB needs. But 100% pure water with no supplements might not be the way to go.

North West cichlids as in central American?

Rodi is usually used for sensitive species or sw. Rams, etc. I used it for low brackish top offs. Usually you have to add back minerals like seachem trace or similar for a lot of species non sw

Basically with rodi you remove everything from the water good and bad. You have to take the blank slate and add back what is needed for a healthy aquarium. How much you add back will depend on the plants and animals that will be kept. There are commercially available mixes to reconstitute rodi water like seachem replenish.
