Is there a way other than venting to tell the sex of a rokteil? New to the cichlid world dealt mostly with catfish so far. Just got a rokteil and may get another I like the little guy.

It's hard to tell from this picture. The main physical difference is the amount of speckling or "worming" on the face, especially the cheeks. Males tend to have a lot, females very little to none. Also, my males are somewhat more colorful (the amount and intensity of red). Here's a couple of pics of the faces of a male and female.

Is the speckling constant cause mine fades in and out depending on it's mood

And have yours spawned cause I would like to try and start breeding them. I'm looking for another but trying to figure out whether mine is male or female. I'll see if I can tell now that you have told me a way to do it. Thanks Still doing research on them appreciate the info.

Well I looked at my severum and it's a male going by what u were saying about the markings on the head and cheeks
