Hi,
I had indoors a Cyperus sp ( Japanese umbrella ) grown up to 7 feet in a container, earth covered allways with water. Last spring I pruned all the long branches, because they were getting broken by the wind and placed it into my pond, bare rooted.

In a very short time, it got used to thew new conditions and start having lots of new branches but shorter. It looks beautiful.

But also, it got a very wide and dense root growing. I know it is good as a hiding place for fish and frogs.

We are in zone 9 and winter gets not much cold as 24 F. And I am planning to leave it in the water. Ok the branches may dye but I believe next spring it can have new growth.

My question is, if to prune the roots till a reasonable level or just leave them as it is.

Thanks for your comments.

Leave them, rinse lightly in spring if necessary to help with anaerobic areas.

Very nice indeed and great idea you have given me. Never thought it could grow just bare rooted in water .

I love bare rooted it seem's to suck up the junk that much better .

Yes Louie, bare rooted plants really look much nicer and the roots become an attraction place for all the creatures around; fish, fry, frogs etc.

Leave them... If water flow passes over/through them even better. My fish spawn in the root mass in spring. Frogs also like woven mat of roots.

You are right. I have 2 more but smaller ones, in pots without soil, today I also de-potted them. Should be better this way, compared to the ugly black plastic containers.
