New to aquarium plants here. Bought some plants yesterday as I have some algae problem with my gar tank. When I tried to strip away the foam wrap at the roots, I found the wraps are stuck to the plant and their roots.

1. Is it ok if I don't remove the wraps?

2. Can I pot them without any soil/substrate?

Giving me a headache since I know nuts about plants. Right now they're sitting in a guppy tank first as I'll only do water change this weekend.

Not sure if this foam wrap if the same material i'm thinking about, but have you tried swishing the roots in a small bucket of water to remove the main foam and then slowly and carefully remove the rest manually?

As for can they be planted without soil / substrate; that all depends on what plant you are dealing with, since some will work where others will fail miserably without its needs met...

I'll post a pic when I get home from work later. They got mandarin words all over the aquarium which I can't read and didn't ask :/ big mistake.

Post a pic of it and maybe i'll be able to help a little depending on if its simplified Chinese or traditional...

That's easy, do it underwater; Remove the plants from the pot, now submerge the plant under water and simply pull the foam from the roots... I've found it much easier to do when you do it underwater!!!

Yeah, tried that yesterday, with the clips off after a day it got looser although some roots are broken. Can anyone help to ID the plants? Bought 2 Windelovs as well.

Had to remove the tinfoil barbs from the gar tank. They reduced my anacharis from a bunch to 3-4 stems.

One on the right looks like jungle val since it has broad leaves, one sort of in the middle looks like bacopa monnieri, one in the back on the left looks like another bacopa monnieri, and the on the right front looks like didiplis diandra.

Yeah barbs are well known fin nippers, and will nip at plants too. That's why I never add barbs to any of my tanks....

Thanks for your help. I'll be moving them to the tank after water change this Saturday.

Planted them on Saturday after a total cleaning of the tank. Water turned from green tint to brown before that. Removed a lot of the bigger rocks from the pic. Let's see how many days before the algae comes back. Hopefully the plants will slow their growth.
