ok, the guys at my local fish store are telling my rope fish wont grow over 1 foot long. And from another person says they grow to 3 feet and as big around as your arm...

Does anyone have a real honest answer???

HOW BIG DO ROPEFISH GET!

they CAN get 3 feet but not anywhere NEAR as thick as your arm. (think sharpie thickness)
18 inches is more likely.

in the wild they can reach 3ft. but in home aquarium u'll rarely find any longer than 20"

well i have the option of growing them as large as they can get and tossing them in an indoor 1000 gallon pond. I was just wondering if they will ever be suitable for that.. it doesnt sound like it.

its said they can get to about 3 ft in the wild. but no i don't believe they'll ever be as thick as your arm. in captivity, their max size is typically around 15"-18", maybe 20" tops. don't necessarily expect every individual to reach 20" though. And they grow slowww. Even at 18", its still relatively thin as mentioned already. So if you have large fish in the pond, then no i don't think it'll be suitable.

definitely agree with everything ricky said above. i have kept several rope fish and even the "big" ones never cleared more than 16" or so. i've seen some big ones in museum collections and they were maybe 20" long tops. keep in mind that 3' size is the wild maximum; so even fishes in the wild will generally not reach that size. and in terms of thickness, HIGHLY doubtful they would ever (wild or otherwise) get as thick as one's arm.

in captivity you could keep a rope fish in a tank 18" wide for life with no problem--
