Came home to my ropefish on the carpet. He was only 5 inches, so I guess he slipped through the hole where my heater cord is. I covered all holes with tape. I hope that will keep my bigger one in the tank.

No. I was too late. The hole couldn't have been a half inch around. Do you think tape will keep the other one in. It's alot bigger almost a foot long. I have a versa glass top. Tiny gap, taped now.

seems good to me usually i use something random to cover up my hole. Like have 2 main holes i worry about the one in between my canister filter in-take and out-take. I cover that with my massivore pellet bag. (double use lol) And the other is the gap between my cling-on filter and the end of the tank. I just cover that one up with a huge piece of styrofoam and a football on top of it. So far no escapes. What i think you should do is put some sort of plastic plant or something right under where the hole it so if they try and jump it will slow their momentum.

Sorry to hear about your loss. I currently have 5 rope fish. I have lost at least three to walkabouts over the years. I use duct tape. You can get the stuff in all sorts of colors but I found black blends with the aquariums. Duct tape is strong and the adhesive tends to stay in place for quite awhile. I only have to replace the tape about twice a year. I always keep a roll in my fishroom!
