I just purchased a rope fish on sale at my LFS for 12.99 ( cdn ),,,,,was that a fair price?,,,,and i only have little info on him,,,,,anyone here own one?,,,,,what can i expect with this dude,,,,ive been keeping an eye on him because he is about 9 inches long and i have some small fish in the 108 gal. with him,,,,,so far he has behaved,,,,,all imput is appreciated

they atr known for eating small fish can grow up to 12in. or so. like bloodworms, ghost shrimp guppies. im no pro but this is what ive learned

They get a bit on the long side and are great escape artists so keep the tank well covered. Bloodworms, brine shrimp, shrimp pellets all make good foods for them.

Number 1 prime directive - cover the tank well. They WILL get out.
Number 2 prime directive - watch out for grey patches on their sides. This seems to be some kind of parasitic/bacterial infection which is very difficult to shift often resulting in death.

Most fish will be ok with reed/rope fish just avoid very slow moving ones.

Pricewise, in the uk they are usually marked up a lot e.g.
Trade(wholesaler) £1.45 each
Trade (Import) much much less
Retail £8-10
So you did pay a good price but it seems that the shops make a good old mark up from my mates the reeders.

theyre a docile fish, anything larger than a guppy will be ignored. They tend to either hardly move at all, or swim wildly about the tank when they're feeling bored/lonely.

PufferXtreme is SO right. Don't just cover the tank well, cover it really, really well.
They should rename them houdini fish

Nothing beats a Reedfish when it comes to escapology. They know things we don't.

Anyone got a contender for ultimate escapologist?

How about clarius catfish?

Octopus. You have to have a completely closed system. And duct tape. Lots of duct tape. They can fit through any hole bigger then their beak...

As for hard core escape artists that are fresh water... peacock eels and tire tracks will get out.

For the most part, any long snakelike fish has great potential to escape from a tank that has any hole big enough that they can fit through.

Any fish with a built-in teleportation device is quite good at escaping from a tank.
Laser glass-cutting tools help too.
