Ive had a pair of ropefish since the beginning of this year - both slightly over a foot long, one male, one female. They've been very happy - eating bloodworms, beefheart, rosies, feeder guppies... whatever they can catch... I'd heard when I bought them that they liked to try to escape, but I'd never seen them even stay near the water's surface for longer than 2 or 3 seconds. Several days ago, I cleaned the tank in the same routine I always do and did a little bit of rearranging. They had two chunks of malaysia wood and two plants - the "giants" 3 foot long plastic ones. (Yep. Jungle in there!) I took one of the two plants out - this still left one to cover the entire top of the surface of the water and they still had lots and lots of hiding places with the wood. I finished the tank cleaning late at night - the next morning I went to work, as did my boyfriend. He called me when he got home at 3PM... my little girl had leaped out of the tank and was in the sink... bone dry. She was fine - luckily she'd landed on the side of the sink that DOESNT go to the garbage disposal. Shortly after I got home... there was a huge splash and the boy was flopping about in the other side of the sink. It took awhile to catch him - sink full of dirty dishes (including cut*co knives!) - an absolute nightmare - but now I'm confused. We blocked all exits for the tank. Why in the world did they try to escape? Both in one day when they'd been perfectly happy before? I did not change their diet - there are still half a dozen or so feeder guppies at the top of the tank if they are interested in hunting... I don't get it.
