Hello Monster Fish Keepers community!
I have 4 delightful ropefish that I have had for about 6 months now, and they are just starting to come out from under their rock more often. They swim up to the surface and back down, and they swim around the tank much more than they used to. They aren't flailing or anything, although their movements are naturally wiggly. It almost looks like they are playing! What I want to know from other ropefish keepers: Is this normal behavior? Are my ropefish just getting comfortable with their surroundings or should I be concerned that something is wrong?

For reference:
I have them in a 46-gallon planted tank, along with 5 medium-sized gouramis and a para pleco. There are some good hiding places in the tank. I change the water weekly or more often, if needed, to keep the ammonia and nitrite 0 and nitrate below 40. The pH is generally 7.4 - 7.8. I'm running 2 big sponge filters in there and I have a custom made tight-fitting lid with rocks on the corners just to be safe. I try to feed a variety of foods and avoid overfeeding. I even have a 75 gallon tank ready for when my ropefish need an upgrade. I'm really trying to do right by them. So hopefully I can avoid a lecture on how my tank is too small or it isn't properly cycled... I'm just looking for some experience here. Are your ropefish typically fairly active throughout the day, or do they hide away during the day and just come out at night for munchies?

Thanks for sharing!

I have two myself, I'll usually see one or the other but food is the best way to draw them out. Mine enough hiding between plant bases

Mine are active at times I have 7. I will usually see at least 1 or 2 out scouting around. Then there are time when they are all out at the same time racing around the tank being goofy. That happens about once a day usually around feeding time even if I'm not feeding. Sometimes its just for a min other times it'll go on for 30min.

I've got two. Hoping to get at least 1 more.

I have a thick green one that is probably the most active poly in the tank (I've also got senegals, delhezis, and a polli). He's always cruising and out and about...or at least has his head poked out looking at me. The smaller brown one is much less active.

I've got five, 4M/1F. They primarily live in a hollow log. Food will get them out and about, as will water changes, or any other activity. If the other bichirs start to tussle, they'll usually come out. Typically if one is out, they are all out, and they do share this hollow log together like spaghetti in a box.

They can look a little disconcerting when they swim due to their tiny fins and massive bodies, so don't worry about that. Movement is a good thing. Having lots of hiding places and lots of space also helps keep them out and about.

I think they're graceful swimmers.

Having them out and about means they're more comfortable, so good job. Active ropes are not something to be worried about! Mine had times where they were hanging out but they were relatively active compared to my other polys. They'll love the 75 gallon.
