I swapped from tilapia to sinking shrimp and krill pellets a couple months ago, and I'm starting to get worried about my ropefish. I don't think he's eaten since the switch. He's always eaten much more slowly than the bichirs and I try to give him the advantage by dropping some of the food in front of his nose, but I've never seen him take it.

He looks healthy, but then again, I don't see a lot of ropefish so I couldn't say what healthy is for one of them.

I suppose he could be eating snails in the middle of the night (there are a LOT of tiny ones in the tank, usually about 2-3mm around.) I've also noticed some big chunks missing from my anubias leaves. Perhaps I have a vegetarian ropefish?

Anyway, my question here is, are shrimp pellets any good for ropefish, and if not, what's another easy food for them? I'd rather not deal with thawing and cutting, and the messes left behind from doing so, as I was with the tilapia. Prepared foods would be best.

hikari carnivore pellets are a great option if you want to stick to a prepared food. Shrimp and krill pellets are okay but not really designed to be a staple - that is to say that they're not really a balanced diet. Frozen bloodworms are a great treat as well and don't make much of a mess, though they would need to be thawed.

And don't worry if it takes a couple weeks for your ropefish to eat since they, like bichirs, can survive a good while without food. Thats one of the things that has helped them survive for millions of years. Good luck

he will eat those food, just give it sometimes to adjust.

you should see mine that went over 3 months without food, and they on pellets now, floating pellets. They can survive for long time without food, as long as they still active, it should be ok. Just be patient with them.
