since ropes are eel-like and can turn so easily is it possible to keep a ropefish (or three since iv heard they are more active in groups of three minimum) in a 20 long? they would be the only inhabitants? im more concerned about tank space than water quality since i have no problem with frequent water changes.

Make sure it's well covered and no other hole that can make them escaped as even though ropefish have thinner body, they don't like small tanks. One of the reason why they bail out of their tank it's because it's small and they don't feel comfortable in a 20g. Get a 40g or bigger tank it's much better for the ropefishes.

20 gallon long for now would be ok. But evey fish need to be put in a home where they will have more space then they need. Also :iagree:with king-el.

ok, so its a workable plan for a while but not over the long run. at what length would yall recommend that they be moved to a larger tank?

and what about a short bodied senegal? if i remember they only get to 8" so wouldnt that be ok even over the long run? once again it would be the only inhabitant

rope fish in a 20g no way dude they get to long, why not get a great dane and keep it in a bathroom after all its big enough for it to turn around in!

the senegal bichir in a 20g yeh

Yet in my books ya should do at least a 4 foot 50g or 100g

Roefish are slow growing fish and probably the slowest growing fish that I;ve ever keep in my life abou 1-2" per year. A 7" and under would do temporary in that tank. 8-10"+ a 40g+ and you can even keep groups of ropefishes.

A 8" sene would also need a 40g tank. 40g is the min for a 8" bichir.

1"-4" bichir 10-20g
5"-7" bichir 25-35g
8"-12" bichir 40-55g
12"-15" 75g-100g
16"-18" 120g
20"+ 180g or bigger.

Alway get a wider and longer tank not the taller ones. Bigger is always better as you will find out sooner or later that they are nice fish. Ones your hook, you'll get addicted to collect all species. Lol! Happens to most bichir keepers.

yea i agree from king el

definitely agree with King el on this. if you can get a big enough tank definitely get 2 or 3 together

Ropes will not work in 20g no matter how many water changes you do. They will not be happy, that's all there is to it.

IME, they grow quick, as long as you're making the food small enough that they can easily eat it.

I don't think they would be good for a 20g even if it's long. Either growth of slow or fast, they will eventually hit 12"+ And plus if you're planning on a group, imagine 3 Rope Fish that are 12" in there...it would seem a bit small.
