I haven't seen my ropefish eat for a while now. The first I got him, I fed him bloodworms and saw him eat a scoop.

Now he just rests behind the filter or behind the plants, and he doesn't come out to the front of the tank as he used to.

So what to you guys feed ropefish?

Cut up fish and pellets. Water quality good? Other tankmates?

Parameters, tank size, tank mates, when did you get him, etc?

0 ammonia
0 nitrite
40+ nitrate ? unfortunately my tap water has 50 nitrates. I am in the process of getting a water softener to reduce this.

55 gallon, Rosy barbs, giant danio, rainbow shark,.
Got him 3 weeks ago .

Hope this helps?

Water softener won’t reduce ur nitrates. Need a rodi unit to reduce nitrates. Unless ur adding some media to the softener.

That's why I am confused, my family is installing a water softener for better quality but it is on a trial period for 100 days. I will test it when it comes and hopefully it has less or no nitrates. If it doesn't we won't get it.

Adding an RO system could help, but then you'll have to remineralize the water before adding to the tank.
Have you tried heavy plant filtering? Lots of Pothos to fight the nitrates?

The way I think of is it is the mineralizer is the replacement of the tap water decholrinater ?.
I used to have a pothos plant, in 6 months it's literally overtook the tank. But I will try it again and see if it works, thanks.

True, it's not terrible.. But RO + DI resin + mineralizer can add up cost wise. I have a saltwater setup, and with the chlorine/chloramines here I go through Resin every 1-2 months.

You'd want to trim the Pothos and keep them under control, and obviously you just submerge the roots. If they're anything like reef algaes, they consume nutrients as they grow, so growth is good. Just cut the amount in half every so often as it grows and let it keep going.

Good news people, turned out all I needed was patience. My rope is happily eating pellets now! And I feed him occasionally with bloodworms as a treat. I also think he eats my water lettuce as well...
